Power of Influence 2020: Small Business Awardees

Get to know Diesha and Marisela, the two best friends behind The DM Show Podcast – which is inspired by girlfriends, encouraged by conversations, and strengthened by experiences. These gals release a new show each week and have successfully expanded their small business and digital community into IRL events with hundreds of attendees. We can’t wait until we can share a glass of wine of four with these two in person, until then, we’re lucky to enjoy their dynamic relationship and timely topics each week on the podcast.

Influencer Lab: How do you use your Influence to empower other women?

Diesha & Marisela: We offer a judgment-free zone where women can listen to real conversations about topics that matter to all of us. Each week we invite women to join us for a glass of wine and talk about things like motherhood, sex, relationships, women empowerment, and career.

We also want women to step away from their busy lives and have some fun so we gossip about pop culture, trending topics, and unique feminism articles we read in the news.

The Influencer Lab: What is your secret to growing a highly engaged audience?

Diesha & Marisela: Our podcast is focused on women supporting women. We open up ourselves through taboo conversations that all women can relate to. Those real connection type talks that give women the comfort of knowing they are not alone. Mostly we focus on finding humor in all situations because laughter is our medicine for getting through life.

The Influencer Lab: What three things are you focusing on to steady yourself and your business during these uncertain times of a COVID-19?

Diesha & Marisela:

1. We are continuing to encourage women to have authentic conversations. To focus on gratitude and finding joy in one thing every day. Reminding our friends to check in on their girlfriends often. We are all in this together.

2. Bringing new and fun ways to connect with women and women-owned businesses and brands. We held our first zoom virtual happy hour where we hosted 50 ladies with wine and cheese on a Friday night in mid-April.

3. Also, inviting new and exciting hosts on the podcast to help cover important topics to women. Our mission is to connect women through open and unapologetic conversations that women experience; motherhood, relationships, health and fitness, and some vanity topics like, skin and injectables and of course, sharing embarrassing confessions.

Meet Amy Nassar of @styledinmotherhood, and awardee of our Power of Influence 2020 list in the Motherhood category. We love what Amy says about the power of sharing authentic experiences with her four children and her online community of followers!

Read on to learn how Amy uses the power of her influence to uplift:

The Influencer Lab: How do you use your Influence to empower other women?

Styledinmotherhood: I feel as though some women have a negative image of motherhood or are afraid that once they become moms, their life will be over. Yes, change definitely comes with motherhood, but you can still pursue a career, have a life, socialize with friends, and have fun with your kiddos! I hope through my Instagram, I can empower women to see that motherhood is a wonderful, once in a lifetime experience and with it, you become the center of someone else’s universe, while still maintaining your existence. You can enjoy the same things in life with your children, be a role model for your kids, teach them, love them, explore the world with them, and still find time for YOU;  but the love you get in return is immeasurable and worth it all!

The Influencer Lab: What is your secret to growing a highly engaged audience?

Styledinmotherhood: I am completely honest and genuine in everything I post! I try to share my experience as a mom of four because I think that speaks out to a lot of my followers and I’ve realized that the things that interest me and my kids tend to interest others too. I’ll never tell you something is great for your kids if it’s not; I’ll never tell you to go somewhere unless it’s worth going to, and I’ll never encourage you to buy something if I don’t genuinely like it myself. So, being ME and being 100% honest I think allows others to continue to engage with me! It’s not about the number of followers or likes or comments, but rather the quality of my relationship with my Instagram family and my followers.

The Influencer Lab: What three things are you focusing on to steady yourself and your business during these uncertain times of a COVID-19?

Styledinmotherhood: During all this uncertainty and being home with my kids, I’m trying to keep my followers engaged and give them positive energy by:

  1. trying to encourage them to keep their faith and stay positive
  2. focusing a lot on my mom followers and motivating them to enjoy this time with their kids by sharing lots of family cooking, kids crafts, and other family activity ideas
  3. serving as an outlet for moms and others to come to my page for a smile, a laugh, a moment of sanity, a workout idea or anything else they need for self-care

Power of Influence 2020: Motherhood Awardee

Meet Mallory Hank-Johnson of @LifeByMJ, and awardee of our Power of Influence 2020 list in the Motherhood category. We admire Mallory’s work hustle and transparency around sharing those less than pretty moments in family life. She also recently started a podcast, A Life By You, that aims at helping women create a life on their terms by harnessing the power of social media. MJ is a true Mompreneur!

Here’s a recap of what she had to say about the power of her influence:

The Influencer Lab: How do you use your Influence to empower other women?

LifeByMJ: As women, we all have the power to create the life we want to lead and by sharing my own journey – as a millennial mother, wife, and woman of color juggling a 9 to 5 plus a business – I hope to inspire others to chase the things they dream to do. I started my platform by creating relatable content, sharing my own insights, struggles, as well as wins in this incredible life I’ve been blessed with. And each time I show up, I always post with that same transparency and intent, pushing others to do the same as there is so much power and freedom in authenticity.

The Influencer Lab: What is your secret to growing a highly engaged audience?

LifeByMJ: Each time I show up on social media, I think, “What do I want my audience to feel, learn, or do from this piece of content?” While I certainly create content I enjoy making, I’m always thinking about the perceived value for the end-user. Additionally, I believe full transparency about my life via social media has helped cultivate an amazing community, who has been there for me even when things aren’t so “pretty.” Here’s the thing: with the right equipment, apps, and knowledge, anyone can take aesthetically pleasing pictures. But cultivating a supportive community with while being completely yourself really is incredible.

The Influencer Lab: What three things are you focusing on to steady yourself and your business during these uncertain times of a COVID-19?

LifeByMJ:

  1. Community: Being an influencer is an honor I do not take lightly, therefore, it’s imperative I continually nurture my current audience while still strategically connecting with others I feel would benefit from my content.
  2. Value: Always, always, always continually showing up and creating intentional content that is of value. Whether it’s a sponsored post, a soft-sell on one of my own services, or even a selfie, I believe delivering value via social media is more important than ever as audiences have a plethora of choices of who they can follow and consume.
  3. Time + Patience: My business is currently in a stage where I am creating sustainable workflows and processes that will allow me to scale. While I know where I want to go, I need to allow myself, my business, as well as this economy some time to evolve and then I can react accordingly. In the meantime, I’ll keep planting my seeds to bloom later.

Power of Influence 2020: Beauty Awardee

Meet Lindsey Gurk @lindseygurk, awardee of our Power of Influence 2020 list in the Beauty category – although we could surely honor her in our Motherhood category as Lindsey will welcome her second child in late 2020! Aside from being one of our favorite influencers, Lindsey is also a TV Host and owner of The Nomis Niche Blog where she shares her beauty tips, outfit inspiration and motherhood adventures.

The Influencer Lab: How do you use your Influence to empower other women?

Lindsey: I think the way I go about empowerment is a little different than most. I definitely don’t try and put up a facade that I have everything together. Some days I feel like I can take on anything, and other days I leave my phone in the fridge. I show all these parts of my life on social media because I just want women to know that it’s OK to laugh at the chaos. I try to be a friend to these women because that’s exactly how I see them… as friends. My followers are friends and we help one another and lift each other up.

I think as women, especially mothers, we are so incredibly hard on ourselves. Sometimes we put ourselves in these little boxes and when things don’t fit into place perfectly we think something’s wrong with us. No girlfriend, it’s the box. Get out of it. If you REALLY want to feel empowered you need to be your authentic self and surround yourself with people who appreciate your worth.

The Influencer Lab: What is your secret to growing a highly engaged audience?

Lindsey: If you want your audience to engage with you, you need to engage with them. Don’t post a photo on Instagram then close the app. That’s called “post and ghost” and it’s not helpful. Engage with comments coming in, search hashtags you’ve used to find photos you can like and comment on, and always respond to your dm’s or questions you may be getting in your comment section.

Another tip: BE YOURSELF. People are smart. Even through a screen, they can tell if someone is being fake. Think about your favorite influencers. You’re probably liking and commenting on most if not all of their photos. Why? Because you feel connected to them. It’s not just about the great shoes and killer clothes. It’s about CONNECTION.

The Influencer Lab: What three things are you focusing on to steady yourself and your business during these uncertain times of a COVID-19?

Lindsey:

  1. My pregnancy! It’s hard to keep calm in the middle of all of this while also having your hormones throw a rager in your body. But, I believe that keeping calm and staying as positive as possible is going to transfer to this growing baby. Instead of looking at the negative, try to enjoy time at home, time with family, video chats with friends, etc. When this is all over the world is going to collectively celebrate and it’s going to be absolutely beautiful!
  2. I only do what is absolutely necessary each day. I’m exhausted, my toddler is constantly trying to electrocute himself, and I can’t self-medicate with wine (help!). For me personally, this is not the time to kick-start a new vertical for my business. So, I make a list of three things that I need to get done that day and then add a few things that would be nice to complete, but aren’t necessary. I’m just doing what I can when I can.
  3. I’m fine-tuning my brand. I may not be able to start something brand new at this time, but I can definitely fine-tune what I’ve already got going on. I’ve been using this time to look at analytics and figure out what content works best. I’ve finally found an aesthetic I love and worked out a new schedule that fits with my lifestyle. I feel more confident than ever with where things are going. Let’s do this!
